Fastest Laps for Sandy Mitchell at a rain drenched Kimbolton
13 October 2013
Saturday's testing at Kimbolton was to prove hugely useful for Sandy Mitchell gaining him more experience driving in Junior Max in the wet and dry.
Sandy showed great pace throughout the day, thriving in the wet conditions and was also given a taste of Junior Max on a tricky drying track.
Heavy rain was to be the predominant weather for the whole of Sunday's racing. Sandy had a steady 3 lap practice then went on to qualify in 4th on a very wet circuit.
In the only heat, he dropped to 5th at the start from P4 but quickly worked his way up to third position before being caught by a swarm of karts going into "Bus Stop" corner, in a great move on the exit Sandy emerged in fourth position powering on to hold 4th all the way to the chequered flag setting the fastest lap with a time of 51.60 seconds.
Qualifying 4th and a heat finish of 4th gave Sandy a starting position of P3 for the pre-final. An excellent start allowed him to keep position and stay in 3rd with the front runners but after a slight clip of the kerb whilst exiting onto the straight Sandy dropped to 4th for a period before re-taking 3rd again only to be passed on the last lap giving him another 4th place finish.
A really good start in the final from P4 on the grid saw Sandy move immediately into third position during turn one, after a couple of changes in position with the chasing kart Sandy eventually started to increase the gap and start catching the kart in 2nd place. A podium finish looked to be on the cards but then the battenburg flag came out and bunched the whole grid back together, on the re-start Sandy managed to briefly get into second place before being pushed off the circuit into the "Bus Stop" corner forcing him over the grass and back down to 5th. Sandy managed to get past one kart on the last turn onto the line to finish in 4th yet again setting the joint fastest lap with a time of 52.02 seconds.
Sandy: "This was another good race weekend where I gained more experience in the Junior Max kart in some very mixed conditions. I am really pleased setting fastest laps in the heat and the final and having been on the pace all day giving some really exciting racing. Thanks to my sponsors, family and everyone at RL who worked really hard this weekend!"
