Sandy swaps Playstation for the real thing
September 9, 2019
Scots endurance racer Sandy will swap his PlayStation for the steering wheel of his 190mph Lamborghini GT3 when he tackles the iconic track at Laguna Seca in California this weekend (Sept 14/15).
Sandy, the 19-year-old from Forfar, heads to the famous Monterey track for the penultimate double-header in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North American Championship.
And the Scot, partnered by his Italian team-mate, Andrea Amici in their No. 1 Prestige Performance Lamborghini Huracán, prepared by Wayne Taylor Racing, is looking forward to realising a childhood dream at the daunting 2.23-mile American circuit.
“Laguna Seca is a track I’ve grown up playing on the PlayStation since I was a little kid,” Sandy, personally backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Whisky and currently just 11 points off the championship lead with four races remaining, said.
“I’ve always enjoyed it.
It’s another iconic circuit with some amazing corners, like the famous Corkscrew, so I’m really looking forward to experiencing it. It certainly seems like a great track, and I’m sure the Lamborghini will be a lot of fun round it.”
Sandy, part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program and a member of the prestigious British Racing Drivers’ Club Rising Star scheme, is determined to carry forward the blistering pace he’s shown over the last few races.
“The car has been super-fast these last few rounds; I’ve set fastest lap in the last three races, and set two new lap records at Road America and Virginia,” he continued.
“We’ve definitely got the pace, so we’ll be aiming to get everything spot-on right through the weekend. Hopefully we can score another couple of wins
Everyone in the Wayne Taylor Racing team, like me, is still feeling very confident about the championship. We’re only 11 points off the lead with four races remaining, so this weekend it would be great to repeat the double win we had at Road America.”
Sandy knows success at Laguna Seca would take the championship down to the wire when the championship heads to Jerez, in Spain, for the final two races.
“I think we all need to focus on just keeping everything neat and tidy this weekend, and if we do that, allied to the pace we know we have in the car, then we should be at the front fighting for the wins,” he explained.
“If we can do that, then it would throw the championship wide open when we head to Spain for the final two races next month."
