Euro GT Victory Hopes dashed
September 7th, 2020
Sandy, along with fellow team-mates Rob Collard and Leo Machitski, saw their hopes of a first win in the GT World Challenge Europe Pro-Am Class, disappear midway through the six-hour race at the Nurburgring. Comfortably leading their class with Collard at the wheel, their No77 Lamborghini was inexplicably forced off the track by a car running in a different class which had outbraked itself into the left-hand entry to the chicane. Thankfully Collard was able to extract the Lamborghini from the gravel and rejoin the race before handing the car over to Sandy.
“Considering that, in addition to the unexpected contact, we were also forced to pit because of a puncture Leo unfortunately suffered, and then deal with an untimely full course yellow flag that helped our rivals to a free pit stop, then I think we have to be content to leave here with a P6 finish and valuable points in the bag,” Sandy said, explaining the other later race-influencing factors.
During the earlier free practice sessions, Sandy had topped the timing screens, and was also the highest-placed Pro-Am driver in his qualifying session. “I was really happy with my pace this weekend, and the Black Bull Barwell Motorsport-prepared Lamborghini felt great throughout practice, qualifying and during the race,” Sandy continued. “This was one of these days that unfortunately just didn’t go our way. I would like to say a big thank you to Barwell and Black Bull Whisky”.
The next race for Sandy, who is personally backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky, and part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program, as well as being a member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club’s elite SuperStars programme, will be at Donington on September 20. Sandy, along with team-mate Collard, will head to Donington leading the British GT Championship, both overall and in the Silver Class.
