Sandy heads to Snetterton
September 29th, 2020
Sandy heads to the penultimate double-header in the British GT Championship at Snetterton this weekend (Oct 3/4) firmly in the mix for the title. And the 20-year-old from Forfar has fond memories of the Norfolk track.
“It definitely has played an important role in my sportscar career so far,” he smiled. “I’ve raced two one-hour double-headers there in the British GT, and I’ve won a race on both occasions.”
Indeed, he became the youngest-ever British GT winner, aged 16 years 169 days — a record which still stands today — when he won the GT4 race at Snetterton in 2016. Twelve months later, he took what was his final GT4 win at the same circuit. Sandy, sharing his Barwell Motorsport-prepared Black Bull Lamborghini Huracan Evo GT3 with Rob Collard, now heads to Norfolk lying second in both the overall British GT Championship, and the Silver Cup. The gap to the leaders is nine points and six points respectively.
“Snetterton’s a pretty cool circuit,” he explained. “It’s quite long, which is nice, and a good mix of demands, with tight, twisty bits and long fast sections. It’s a good combination. The last section of the circuit is the most demanding. But it’s also somewhere you can definitely make a lot of time up by getting it right.”
Sandy, personally-backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky, has no doubt everyone involved with his No78 Lamborghini is ready to step up for the final championship push over the next two rounds.
“Everyone in the team has worked very hard to get us to this position,” Mitchell stated. “Now we have to maintain that level of consistency and deliver in the two one-hour races this weekend. We showed in the last round at Donington that the car is super-quick, and the pitcrew delivered three brilliant pitstops. It’s also great working with Rob. Hopefully we can grab at least a couple of podium positions, and ideally a win. But the main priority is to score a good haul of championship points and ensure we’re still in with the chance of winning the title in the final round at Silverstone.”
