British GT Championship

April 5th, 2023

Lamborghini Factory Driver Sandy, fired-up for British GT Championship return with Black Bull and Barwell as he targets second title.

Former champ Sandy Mitchell launches his bid to win a second Intelligent Money British GT Championship when he tackles the opening double-header at Oulton Park in Cheshire this weekend (April 8-10).

The 23-year-old from Forfar, who won the title in 2020, will pilot car No78, a new-spec Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2, again prepared by Barwell Motorsport and backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky. Sandy, a Lamborghini factory driver and member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, is forging a strong alliance with his new co-driver, the very experienced Shaun Balfe.

“This is the first season I will have raced with Shaun as a team-mate, but over the close season we have completed a number of extensive and productive test sessions around the country,” the Scot explained. During that time we have worked extremely well together and the pace we have managed to deliver in the new-spec Lamborghini has been impressive. That, allied to the experience of everyone in the strong Barwell team, ensures we’ll be on the pace for the opening rounds at Oulton.”

Held over the Easter weekend, the traditional season opener sees qualifying take place on Saturday (Apr 8) ahead of two 60-minute races at the challenging 2.69-mile, 17-turn parkland Oulton Park circuit on Easter Monday. Sandy is eager to get back into GT racing after the winter off-season.

“The British GT Championship is probably the toughest national title in Europe, and we know we’re going to face some fierce competition over the nine races spread out over seven weekends,” he explained. “There’s a bumper 36-car entry in the championship this season, which simply highlights how important the teams and drivers believe the championship is. Shaun and I head into the weekend knowing we have a very fast and reliable car. We’ve been well on the pace in pre-season practice sessions, but qualifying at Oulton will be the first time all the drivers and teams see the opposition flat-out this year."

"It’s a session I always look forward to at the start of every year, and I believe we’re definitely in a position to start the season stronger in 2023. I can’t wait to get back on-track on Saturday,” Mitchell, personally backed by Black Bull Scotch Whisky, stated. And as the new British GT season starts, I’d like to thank my sponsors, Tunnocks, Lamborghini Edinburgh, Upper Dysart Larder and Alan Davie Transport whose combined support ensures I have the strongest package to mount a full-on bid to win the title again this year.”
